Road Signage to Promote Communities

Policies

Issue : A bypass was constructed around the town of Vegreville.  There was however the lack of foresight to provide appropriate road signage to encourage the traffic to stop in Vegreville.  This has had a negative effect on the business community.

Background

In the early 1980s a bypass was constructed and implemented around the town of Vegreville.  This had a positive effect for managing traffic.  There was however the lack of foresight to provide appropriate road signage to encourage the traffic to stop in Vegreville.  This has had a negative effect on the business community due to the lack of traffic coming through town.

Currently the application process for improving road signage to support attracting commercial activities is a prohibitive barrier due to the time lines and the number and level of approvals that are required.   This impedes the community’s ability to benefit from infrastructure that supports the increased traffic flow to the community as well as attempts to increase the tourism traffic.

The Alberta Chamber of Commerce recommends the Government of Alberta:

  1. Provide the municipality with the approval process on privately owned land
  2. Decrease the steps required to obtain these approvals
  3. Put forward the recommendation to the Red Tape Reduction Committee
